Nicole wanted to turn something that was considered a waste product into something useful. In this cute little video, she learns about BioChar–it’s history, how to make it, and all the things it can help.

Biochar is organic material reduced to basically pure carbon. In this state, biochar acts as a reservoir, attracting and holding onto nutrients, water, and microbial life for plant roots. Once it is in the soil, it continues to perform this service year after year.

Biochar can be made from wood scraps, leaves, and old plant parts, turning organic waste into a highly productive amendment for any type of soil. This is a great, simple way for anyone to increase the production of their gardens–whether big or small!
