Listen to famous singer Wintley Phipps at Carnegie Hall. Wintley gives probably the most powerful introduction and rendition of this popular negro spiritual, written by John Newton, a former captain of a slave boat who turned Christian. Where did the tune come from? Mr. Phipps suggests it was a Black song hummed by the slaves on the boat. Listen with tissues in hand.
Mr. Phipps has sung at congressional prayer breakfasts, before royalty, and other influential groups. If you have never heard him before, you will understand why after this video.
